A Place for All

“This is what God’s kingdom is like: a bunch of outcasts and oddballs gathered at a table, not because they are rich or worthy or good, but because they are hungry, because they said yes. And there’s always room for more.” ― Rachel Held Evans, Searching for Sunday: Loving, Leaving, and Finding the Church

Thomas Talks

Something brought you here just now. Maybe you know what you’re looking for. Maybe you can’t name it. Whatever the reason, something gave you a nudge that landed you here, and for your presence and that nudge, we give thanks.

Maybe you’re searching for a church home. Maybe you’re new to the community. Maybe you just haven’t found one yet that’s a good fit for you or your family. Maybe you’re not sure what makes a church feel like a home, so you’re taking time to explore your options.

Maybe you’ve found yourself doubting your faith, your beliefs, “the church” you grew up in, or even “the church” in general. Maybe the answers you’ve been given by the church have brought you more questions than before you received them.

Thomas Talks was established for you. It’s where we open up about our doubts, our disbelief, our questions, and where we talk through them and work together to find answers. Thomas Talks is virtual (meets online through Zoom) and meets every Sunday evening at 7:00 p.m. beginning May 9, 2021. You don’t have to be a member to join in. You just have to have doubts (and we all do!).  Sign up for our newsletter at the bottom of this page to receive the weekly Zoom link.

“But the gospel doesn’t need a coalition devoted to keeping the wrong people out. It needs a family of sinners, saved by grace, committed to tearing down the walls, throwing open the doors, and shouting, “Welcome! There’s bread and wine. Come eat with us and talk.” This isn’t a kingdom for the worthy; it’s a kingdom for the hungry.”
― Rachel Held Evans, Searching for Sunday: Loving, Leaving, and Finding the Church

Blessed are the wonderers with the courage to live into the questions. Seems to me that sooner or later, whether we like the outcome or not, theirs is the answer. – Sarah Bessey

Maybe you’re fairly certain of your faith but have an urge to dig deeper than that 15 minute message on Sunday mornings. Maybe we’ve got just the thing.

JAVA WITH ABBA

Sometimes you just need to talk things out, you know? Java with Abba: Talking Things Out with God and Each Other is a great place to do just that. We meet online Monday evenings at 7:00 p.m. Eastern Time via Zoom and talk about whatever anyone wants to put on the table (except each other).  It might be a passage of scripture someone is struggling with, it might be something one of us is dealing with in our personal lives, or it might be ways we can reach others outside the church or brainstorming how to start a community garden. And it might be exchanging carrot cake recipes. But one thing it always is is fulfilling fellowship.

Growing Closer Yet with God

Maybe your faith is strong, but you’re feeling God’s call to do more. Maybe we can help guide you to the resources you need to discern your calling and act on it.

“Stop waiting for someone else to say that you count, that you matter, that you have worth, that you have a voice, a place, that you are called. Don’t you know, darling? The One who knit you together in your mother’s womb is the one singing these words over you, you are chosen.”
― Sarah Bessey, Jesus Feminist: An Invitation to Revisit the Bible’s View of Women

“Set out, pilgrim. Set out into the freedom and the wandering. Find your people. God is much bigger, wilder, more generous, and more wonderful than you imagined.” – Sarah Bessey

PRAY AND STUDY

Worship takes many forms and is something we’re encouraged to do continuously. Our Wednesday Worship: Pray and Study opens with prayer and then goes into a Bible study. The current study is “What Does It Mean to Be Chosen?” and focuses on Season 1 of the The Chosen streaming series. Pray and Study starts at 7:30 p.m. Eastern Time each Wednesday evening and meets on Zoom. You do not have to be a member of Union Grove to participate in this study.
