EXCERPT

  • From our guidebook: “The Stations of the Cross began as the practice of pious pilgrims traveling to Jerusalem to retrace the final journey of Jesus Christ to Calvary also known as the Via Dolorosa.

The Via Dolorosa (Latin for “Sorrowful Way”, often translated “Way of Suffering”; Arabic: طريق الآلام; Hebrew: ויה דולורוזה) is a processional route in the Old City of Jerusalem. It represents the path that Jesus would have taken, forced by the Roman soldiers, on the way to his crucifixion. The winding route from the former Antonia Fortress to the Church of the Holy Sepulcher — a distance of about 600 meters (2,000 feet) — is a celebrated place of Christian pilgrimage. The current route has been established since the 18th century, replacing various earlier versions. It is today marked by nine of the fourteen Stations of the Cross, with the remaining five stations being inside the Church of the Holy Sepulcher.

Over time and for many who wanted to pass along the same route but could not make the trip to Jerusalem, a practice developed that eventually took the form of the fourteen stations, known as the Stations of the Cross.”

We look forward to seeing you. Come as you are. You do not need to be a member of the church to attend.
